The recovery phrase is the string of 12 or 24 words that can rebuild your entire wallet, on any compatible device.
What it actually is
When you create a wallet of your own, the app generates a private key, a long string of characters that’s hard to read and impossible to memorize. The recovery phrase is the same information, translated into a list of ordinary words, from a standard vocabulary of 2,048 words used by nearly every wallet. The order of the words matters just as much as the words themselves: the same 12 words, in a different order, rebuild a completely different wallet.
How it’s generated
The phrase appears once, when the wallet is created, chosen through a random process that not even the app’s maker can reproduce afterward. No one, no server, and no company keeps a copy of it anywhere else. That’s the difference from an ordinary account password, which a platform can reset: the recovery phrase exists only wherever you wrote it down, at the moment it was generated.
How to keep it
Write the phrase on paper or a fire- and water-resistant metal plate, never in a text file, a phone photo, or a message you send yourself. Any digital copy can reach, through cloud sync or a hacked account, someone who shouldn’t see it. Keep the original somewhere safe and, if the amount justifies the extra care, a second copy in a different physical location, in case of fire or flooding. If you lose it
Without the phrase and without direct access to the device running the wallet, the funds stay on the blockchain, visible but unusable to anyone, including you. There’s no support service, platform, or Coin Bank that can recover a lost phrase: no one holds a backup of it. That’s why it’s worth checking, right from creation, that you transcribed it correctly, rebuilding the wallet from a test copy before sending large amounts into it.
If someone sees it
Whoever has your phrase can transfer everything in the wallet, at any time, without needing anything else. If you suspect someone has seen it, or you typed it in somewhere by mistake, treat the wallet as compromised: create a new one, with a new phrase, and move the funds as fast as possible, before someone else gets to them first.
